A FRESH APPROACH

Powderkeg is a new and exciting brewery whose fresh approach to beer is making waves across the South West. Its beers and brands stand out from other Devon breweries, and its bold style and bright flavours are making Powderkeg one of Devon’s fastest growing producers.

Powderkeg was opened in Woodbury Salterton in 2015 by husband and wife team John and Jess Magill. Within eighteen months of opening its doors, the brewery has already won ‘International Best Lager’ at the renowned IWSC (International Wine & Spirit Competition) Beer Awards – making it the proud producer of ‘one of the 16 best beers in the world’.

Defining itself as a modern English brewery, Powderkeg makes progressive beers inspired by world beer culture. Their outstanding beers use modern hops from the US, New Zealand and Australia to infuse hints of tropical fruits, citrus fruits, even white wine notes. PK uses these ingredients in a sophisticated manner, resulting in beers that are full-flavoured, elegant and balanced – and with that comes great drinkability.

The brewery’s dedication to quality and taste means the beers work as well in high-end hotels and restaurants as they do in local pubs. The brewery’s keg and bottle products are ideal for larger restaurants and bars that want to use local produce. Its cask ales, which pack bags of flavour into moderate ABVs, are perfect for pubs looking to diversify their range and stand out from the crowd.

All of their beers are hand-crafted in small batches, naturally carbonated and then matured to their best at the brewery for anything up to six weeks. This gives the brewery ultimate quality control and makes for a perfect pint every time.

Powderkeg produce two core beers, with a third set to be launched in Spring 2017:

Speak Easy – 4.3% ABV

PK’s Transatlantic Pale brings a little British reserve to the somewhat brash US pale ales. Dry hopped to maximise the fruity aromatics while keeping the bitterness in check and the finish clean, this remarkable beer stimulates the mind and loosens the tongue.

Cut Loose – 4.7% ABV

Cut Loose is a traditional pilsner pepped up with a touch of the Motueka hop from New Zealand. The result is a dry, satisfying lager with invigorating citric fruitiness, made for carefree capers. Winner ‘Best Lager’ – IWSC Beer Awards 2016.

The brewery has also produced a series of interesting and entirely unpredictable specials, which to date have included beers as diverse as Kolsch, brown American IPA and Rye pale ale.

That’s the great thing about Powderkeg – they have the vision to step away from the norm. They carve their own path, experimenting and innovating in whatever way piques their curiosity, but with the talent and technical knowhow to always make it a success.

They are here to shake up the status quo in Devon, and LWC are excited to be a part of that. The collaboration between Powderkeg and LWC is new for 2017, and we expect Powderkeg to be the word and beer on everyone’s lips.
